About us

The diabetes information portal diabinfo.de and its sub-portals Preventing diabetes, Living with diabetes and Information for diabetes professionals are a collaborative effort by Helmholtz Munich, the German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf, and the German Center for Diabetes Research. The portal was initiated by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA). Funding comes from the BZgA, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

diabinfo.de offers up-to-date, neutral, and scientifically validated online information covering all forms of diabetes mellitus and diabetes prevention. Findings from the fields of medicine and diabetes research are presented in an easily comprehensible manner. diabinfo.de is also involved as an exhibitor and organizer in public information events. Experts give lectures presenting the latest scientific findings. Patients, relatives, and interested parties also have the opportunity to contact experts directly and pose individual questions.

All content on diabinfo.de serves to inform the public. All content has been diligently researched and is scientifically sound. However, the information cannot replace consultation with a physician or other qualified specialist personnel. diabinfo.de does not provide advisory services or give recommendations. The listed points of contact, medical facilities, etc. are not exhaustive and their order is purely coincidental and should not be viewed as a classification. Personal statements and views contained in the published testimonials are labeled as such.

diabinfo.de is also involved with the program Reliable Health Information (Verlässliches Gesundheitswissen) (Link in German) from the German Network for Health Literacy (Deutsches Netzwerk Gesundheitskompetenz – DNGK).

Helmholtz Munich is the German Research Center for Health and Environment. It explores the development of common diseases in the context of environmental factors, lifestyle, and individual genetic predisposition, while also developing innovative approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. The center particularly focuses on researching diabetes mellitus, allergies, and chronic lung diseases. Diabetes is viewed as a system where genetics and environmental influences, especially lifestyle, converge. The center works closely with the two Munich universities to discover new therapeutic, preventive and diagnostic approaches. The existing expertise is consolidated in translational research and clinical projects, molecular mechanisms of diabetes development, as well as systems biology and modeling. As a research institution of the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria, Helmholtz Munich is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers and a partner in the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).

The German Diabetes Center (DDZ) is an interdisciplinary research institution that connects molecular and cell biology basic research with clinical and epidemiological research approaches. The DDZ's task is to develop new approaches for the prevention, early detection, and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, it aims to improve the therapy of diabetes and the treatment of its complications, as well as enhance epidemiological data. Extensive clinical studies, for example, investigate how diabetes changes in humans over time and how the course of the disease can be influenced. The DDZ is the German reference center of the Leibniz Association for diabetes and a partner in the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). In this role, the DDZ serves as a point of contact for stakeholders in the healthcare sector.

The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) is a national health research center where 10 diabetes research institutions and university clinics collaborate nationwide. Using modern biomedical technologies, new methods, and research approaches, the DZD significantly contributes to understanding the origin of the disease, developing evidence-based prevention, preventive and healthcare research, and individualized, causal therapies. Various research groups, including experts from basic research, epidemiology, clinical application, and medical professionals, examine the risk, development, progression, and treatment options for diabetes from different perspectives. An important focus is also the dissemination of scientific results to the public and professionals, as well as the incorporation of new treatment methods into guidelines.
